With extensive experience as an expert reviewer, I have worked with numerous funders to evaluate
research proposals across a variety of sectors, including the European Commission and national
funding bodies. My evaluation work spans high-profile proposals such as the LIFE Programme, the
Wallenberg Foundation (Sweden), the National Science Center (Poland), the Icelandic Research
Fund, the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (Hungary), and reviews of Horizon
Europe projects, including LAND4CLIMATE and MountResilience.
My research expertise focuses on the implementation of environmental policies, specifically in the
areas of biodiversity, climate change, and sustainability. Key themes of my work include the
application of sustainable forest management principles, policy coherence across sectors, and the
identification of barriers and opportunities for implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS). I have
also researched the institutional learning necessary for effective policy implementation, as well as
strategies for improving cross-sectoral policy alignment.
A significant portion of my research centers on the ecosystem services concept (and nature’s
contributions to people). I have explored the challenges in applying this concept to biodiversity
conservation and natural resource governance, and have contributed to biodiversity conservation
planning, including assessing the effectiveness of protected areas. In recent years, my work has
expanded to address vulnerability to extreme weather events, climate change adaptation, and how
NbS can help tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
I have actively engaged with stakeholders, policymakers, and the public through dissemination and
communication activities in three languages (English, Swedish, and Polish). These include popular
science articles, blogs (e.g., stanford.io/3dgn5LJ; bit.ly/3uRZEy6), news pieces (e.g., svd.se/a/opX6nW;
bit.ly/3derHSE), stakeholder workshops, EU Green Week events, and lectures for broader audiences
(e.g., https://urplay.se/serie/227389-ur-samtiden-planeten-jorden). I have also collaborated with
organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the European Forest Institute
(EFI), and I have led courses and seminars for Swedish authorities.
A core mission of my research is to advance the understanding and awareness of the critical role
that environmental sustainability—particularly biodiversity—plays in human survival and well-being.
